Prepare the Derailleur for Adjustment
-
- Use one hand to turn the pedals of the bike and use your other hand to shift the bike toward the lowest gear, i.e. 1st gear. If you look towards the rear wheel, you should see that the chain has moved toward the largest sprocket.
- Apply the brake to stop the wheel fully before making any adjustments to the derailleur
- Apply the brake to stop the wheel fully before making any adjustments to the derailleur
- Locate the High Limit Screw, marked “H”, and use a Phillips head screwdriver to turn it clockwise fully until the head is flush with the derailleur.
- Locate barrel adjuster as shown in the image.
-
Turn the Barrel Adjuster clockwise until the adjuster is snug against the derailleur body.
-
Locate the Low Limit Screw, marked “L”, and using a Phillips screwdriver turn counterclockwise until 1/4in or 6mm of the screw is exposed from the derailleur.
- Use one hand to turn the pedals of the bike and use your other hand to shift the bike toward the lowest gear, i.e. 1st gear. If you look towards the rear wheel, you should see that the chain has moved toward the largest sprocket.
Adjusting the High Limit
-
Use one hand to turn the pedals of the bike and use your other hand to shift the bike toward the highest gear, i.e. 7th gear. If you look towards the rear wheel, you should see that the chain has moved toward the smallest sprocket.
-
The chain will likely not reach the smallest sprocket, but the shifter should indicate 7th gear. Before continuing be certain that the shifter indicates 7th gear.
-
-
Apply the brake before making any adjustments to the derailleur
-
Using a Phillips screwdriver turn the High Limit Screw counterclockwise by 1 turn.
-
Turn the pedals of the bike and watch the derailleur and chain closely.
-
If the chain moves to the smallest sprocket continue to step 5.
-
If the chain does not move to the smallest sprocket return to step 2.
-
-
Turn the High Limit Screw counterclockwise by ½ additional turn.
Adjusting the Indexing
-
Verify that the shifter indicates 7th gear and that the chain is on the smallest sprocket.
-
The next steps outline the process to check the indexing between each set of sprockets.
-
Use one hand to turn the pedals of the bike and use your other hand to shift the bike down one gear.
-
If the chain does move down one gear (to a larger sprocket) skip to step 4.
-
If the chain does not move down one gear (to a larger sprocket) shift back up by one gear (to the smaller sprocket), apply the brake to stop the wheel fully, turn the Barrel Adjuster 1 turn counterclockwise and return to step 3.
-
-
If the bike is now in 1st gear, then skip to the next step, if the bike is in a higher gear than 1st return to step 3.
-
Use one hand to turn the pedals of the bike and shift the bike up and down across the entire range of gears to ensure smooth shifting.
-
If the bike seems reluctant to shift from a high gear to a lower one (7th to 6th) turn the Barrel Adjuster counterclockwise one half turn and return to step 4.
-
If the bike seems reluctant to shift from a low gear to a higher one (1st to 2nd) turn the Barrel Adjuster clockwise one half turn and return to step 4.
-
If the bike shifts smoothly across all gears, then move on to Adjusting the Low Limit
-
Adjusting the Low Limit
-
Use one hand to turn the pedals of the bike and use your other hand to shift the bike to the lowest gear, i.e. 1st gear. If you look towards the rear wheel, you should see that the chain has moved to the largest sprocket.
-
Locate the Low Limit Screw and the gap between the internal end of the screw and the derailleur body.
-
Using a Phillips screwdriver turn the Low Limit Screw clockwise to remove the gap between the Low Limit Screw and the Derailleur body.
-
Use one hand to turn the pedals of the bike and use your other hand to shift the bike to the 2nd gear.
-
Use one hand to turn the pedals of the bike and use your other hand to shift the bike back to the 1st gear.
-
If the bike shifts into the 1st gear smoothly skip to Preparing to Ride.
-
If the bike does not shift into the 1st gear smoothly turn the Low Limit Screw counterclockwise ½ turn and return to step 4.
-
Reinstall the Front wheel
-
Lift the fork of the bike upward until the rear wheel rests on the floor.
-
Reinstall the front wheel
- Reference the Front Wheel Installation Guide if necessary
